(AP) ? Down 2-0 against the San Antonio Spurs, the Los Angeles Clippers face the tough task of needing two victories at home to keep pace with the NBA’s hottest team. Making things worse are injuries to Chris Paul and Blake Griffin that have robbed the superstars of their effectiveness.

“The mood is still pretty good,” Griffin said Friday after practice and a video session. “We’re not completely out of this.”

Not yet.

Game 3 on Saturday is particularly crucial for the Clippers because no team in NBA history has ever rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a series.

“The next game is our Game 7,” Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. “We got to fight, we got to claw, we got to do whatever we can.”

Paul’s turnovers in the playoffs ? 38 in nine games ? are up significantly since he strained his right hip, while Griffin added a left hip injury in Game 2 to a sprained right knee that was already limiting his elevation to the rim.

“It’s one of those nagging things,” Griffin said about his hip. “Just kind of put that to the list of everything that we have right now. We just got to find a way to play through them and find a way to counteract them.”

Bolstered by inspired play from their trio of 30-somethings, the Spurs have won 16 straight games, including a 6-0 mark in the playoffs. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili have helped them to a 27-2 record in their last 29 games.

They beat the Clippers by double digits in each of the first two games, using their depth and 3-point shooting.

“We’ve shifted the offense a bit so it’s a little more perimeter-oriented the last couple of years,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “Timmy understands that, but he continues to rebound and play defense. We’ve gone to him quite a bit during these playoffs. He’s a competitive son of gun and he’s one hell of a player.”

The Clippers will try to regroup with two straight games at home, where they were better than on the road in the regular season. They did lose Game 6 to the Grizzlies at Staples Center on May 11, the last time they were there, before winning Game 7 in Memphis to reach the Western Conference semifinals.

“We know Game 3 is going to be very, very hard,” Parker said. “We should focus on that and not focus on the winning streak or what we’re doing good. We know Saturday is going to be a long, long, long game. Very physical.”

The unusual schedule of consecutive games on Saturday and Sunday will test the mettle of Paul and Griffin, along with the aging Duncan (36), Parker (30) and Ginobili (34).

“It’s hard to find that fine line between conserving and pacing yourself, and you got to kind of give it your all every minute. I’m just kind of searching for that,” said Griffin, who had 20 points and one rebound in Game 2.

“The best thing about the back-to-back is that they have to go, too. We’re not put at any disadvantage that they aren’t. It’s going to be a big mental game Sunday coming off the second day. We got to be prepared and locked in.”

Paul, who wasn’t made available to the media on Friday, has been unwilling to admit his injury is affecting his play. But his numbers tell the story. He had 16 points and 13 turnovers in the first two games.

“He’s a little tentative. He hasn’t gotten his legs under him yet,” Del Negro said. “Some of the turnovers are not like him. I expect him to bounce back well.”

Arthritis Treatment: What Is PRP? | Baby care | Health and Fitness …

Platelet-wealthy plasma (PRP) has become a popular form of usage for both athletic injuries as well as degenerative stipulations such as tendon and ligament injuries.

Platelets are vital fluid cells that are primarily involved in concretion formation. However, they also comprehend a significant number of proteins that are conducive in attracting other blood cells and trunk cells.

The theory is that bioactive substances in the inside of platelets help to accelerate the healing in impressible tissues. Most soft tissues like as tendons, ligaments, and even cartilage hold relatively poor blood supplies what one. means the length of time required to cure is relatively long.

PRP is filled with increase factors that stimulate the formation of vital fluid vessels (this is termed neovascularization) what one. promotes transport of needed nutrients for reproduction of diseased or damaged tissue. These factors hold transforming growth factor, vascular endothelial increase factor, platelet-derived growth agent, fibroblast growth factor, and epidermal increase factor, among others.

Platelet-wealthy plasma is obtained by centrifuging a specimen of all blood from the patient. This causes disjunction of blood into its various components including red vital fluid cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Platelet wealthy plasma should contain at least four to five seasons baseline concentrations of platelets in blood. So because the normal platelet count is roughly 200,000-250,000 platelets/microliter, a advantageous PRP specimen will contain about a a thousand thousand platelets.

The quality of a PRP specimen can be affected by factors like as a patient?s general health, concurrent medicines, circadian periodical emphasis (the natural rise and fall as dictated by the biologic clock), and the nearness of dehydration.

Platelets contain large alpha granules that are the repositories for increase factors. These cells can be activated by a count of different substances found in the blood. These hold calcium, magnesium, thrombin, and serotonin. Platelets can likewise be activated by smoking.

Once activated, they discharge their increase factors.

These growth factors are clever to stimulate healing by making new blood vessels, attracting inflaming cells as well as autologous stem cells into the country to help build new tissue, cell multiplication, and small room differentiation.

Proper preparation of the PRP specimen is exact to a good outcome.

Patients with the two qualitative as well as quantitative abnormalities in platelets are apparently not good candidates for this treatment modality. Barren technique and proper manipulation of the specimen are weighty. Medications that block platelet performance or medicines that inhibit inflammation be obliged to be discontinued or modified before a procedure is entertained.

(AP Photo/Eranga Jayawardena,File)

(AP) ? The western United States and eastern Asia will be treated this weekend to a rare solar spectacle when the moon slides across the sun, creating a “ring of fire.”

But scientists caution would-be viewers to be very careful because the sun’s damaging rays will remain powerful even during the annular solar eclipse. The advice: Either wear specially designed protective eyewear or attend a viewing event ? at a planetarium or amateur astronomy club, for example ? to avoid risk of serious eye injury.

The solar spectacle will first be seen in eastern Asia around dawn Monday, local time. Weather permitting, millions of early risers in southern China, northern Taiwan and southeast Japan will be able to catch the ring eclipse.

Then, the late day sun (on Sunday in the U.S.) will transform into a glowing ring in southwest Oregon, Northern California, central Nevada, southern Utah, northern Arizona and New Mexico and finally the Texas Panhandle.

For 3 ? hours, the eclipse follows an 8,500-mile path with the ring-of-fire phenomenon lasting as long as 5 minutes, depending on location.

Outside this narrow band, other parts of the U.S. and portions of Canada and Mexico will be treated to a partial eclipse. The Eastern Seaboard will be shut out, but people can find online sites that plan to broadcast the event live.

It’s impossible to know how many people plan to make an event of the ring-of-fire spectacle, the likes of which hasn’t been seen in the continental U.S. for nearly two decades.

One clue to demand might be found at the planetarium at the University of Nevada, Reno, which had to order another 10,000 solar viewing glasses after it sold out of them ? 17,000 pairs at $2 each ? last week.

McNamee: Some items in beer can not from Clemens

By FREDERIC J. FROMMER

updated 11:55 a.m. ET May 18, 2012

WASHINGTON – Brian McNamee testified Friday that some of the medical evidence he saved in a beer can was not used on former pitcher Roger Clemens.

McNamee is the main prosecution witness in the case against Clemens, who’s accused of lying to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. McNamee testified this week that he injected the seven-time Cy Young Award winner with steroids and human growth hormone.

McNamee has said he kept medical evidence from injecting Clemens with steroids in 2001, and stored some of the material in a Miller Lite beer can. But under cross-examination, he acknowledged that some of the items in the can were not in fact used on Clemens, such as a small bottle of HGH, a needle to inject HGH, and a bottle of saline solution used for such injections.

McNamee, Clemens’ former strength and conditioning coach, also testified that a pin included in the beer can might not have been used on Clemens. He said it was either used on Clemens or another player, whom he did not name.

Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin is trying to raise doubts about the integrity of the evidence.

“You were a police office for three years, you know about chain of custody?” he asked.

“A little bit,” McNamee replied.

“Haven’t you testified that everything in beer can was for Roger?” Hardin asked.

“Not everything,” McNamee said. He added: “I’ve said that all along – it could have been from three different players.”

Although Hardin expressed shock that some items in the beer can were not used on Clemens, McNamee told congressional investigators the same thing in 2008, prior to the hearing in which he and Clemens testified.

An investigator questioned the source of the HGH in the beer can, because McNamee said he injected Clemens with HGH only in 2000, not 2001. The investigator asked if it was Chuck Knoblauch, who has admitted taking HGH.

“It can only be Knoblauch,” McNamee replied.

Also Friday, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said he hoped the trial would be over by June 8. He said he had conflicts for the next several weeks after that and that if the trial isn’t finished by then, “We’ll probably have to go into recess for at least a month, and then we’ll have some real unhappy jurors.”

The day before, out of earshot of the jury, the judged revealing that some jurors had wondered how long the trial will last.

“At this pace, I’ll guess we’ll be here forever,” Walton said.

A prosecutor said he expected to finish the case by the end of next week – or at the latest early the following week. He said the government had 14 more witnesses after McNamee.

“Fourteen additional witnesses?” Walton said incredulously.

After the government’s case, the defense then brings its own witnesses if it chooses to.

Walton said that the case is taking too long, that jurors want to get back to their lives. He warned that one side could suffer – although he didn’t know which one.

Chided by the judge on Thursday for what he called a confusing and mostly pointless cross-examination, Hardin finally turned, after 19 hours, to his central accusation: that McNamee doctored the physical evidence to frame the former star pitcher.

Hardin started that attack late Thursday, insinuating that McNamee manufactured the evidence after Clemens’ televised denials of steroids use.

“All of a sudden, the person being accused is fighting back,” Hardin said, “and you have to figure out some way to save yourself.”

Defense lawyers have said that they will attack the chain of custody of the materials, which McNamee said he stored at his house from 2001 until 2008, when he and his lawyers turned the evidence over to federal authorities.

The Clemens team has also suggested that McNamee put the steroids in the needle after injecting Clemens and that McNamee actually used the needle to inject Clemens with vitamin B12. Clemens has maintained for years that he received B12 shots and the local anesthetic lidocaine but not performance-enhancing drugs.

(AP Photo, File)

(AP) ? Government troops battling al-Qaida fighters in southern Yemen have made inroads into the militants’ strongholds, but the offensive on a strategic city has slowed because of concerns the extremists could launch a surprise counterattack, military officials said Thursday.

Backed by heavy artillery and warplanes, Yemeni troops have advanced into Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province, which fell under the control of al-Qaida-linked fighters last year as the country was engulfed by political turmoil that led to the ouster of longtime leader Ali Abdullah Saleh.

If the military were to capture Zinjibar, it would deal a heavy blow to al-Qaida by depriving it of a key base and scattering its fighters to smaller towns and mountain areas of the south.

Yemeni officials said the assault on Zinjibar, which is part of the government’s broader offensive aimed at uprooting al-Qaida in the south, has slowed down in part because of poor intelligence in the city. They said army commanders were unsure whether most of the militants there have been killed, simply fled the battle or retreated for tactical reasons and were preparing a counteroffensive.

The U.S. is deeply concerned about al-Qaida’s branch in Yemen, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which was behind three failed bomb plots on U.S. soil. Washington has thrown its support behind Saleh’s successor, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who has vowed to tackle the threat from al-Qaida in the country.

As part of the fight, Hadi is restructuring the military and removing Saleh’s loyalists from key posts, though there are concerns that the former leader, who stepped down in February, is still obstructing reforms and trying to retain influence through his cronies.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama signed an executive order allowing the Treasury Department to freeze the U.S.-based assets of individuals who the White House says “threaten the peace, security and stability” of Yemen. The order was meant as a deterrent against future action and does not immediately levy any penalties against specific people or organizations.

Yemeni officials point to an ongoing power struggle between Hadi and Saleh.

In one recent example, officials say Saleh’s son Ahmed, who commands the elite Republican Guard, has sought to undermine a Hadi-appointed commander of one of the Guard’s battalions. The officials say Ahmed has been stirring up dissent within the battalion, making it impossible for the Hadi appointee to assume control.

Three foreign diplomats told The Associated Press that they have met with Ahmed to try to convince him to allow the new commander to take his post.

One diplomat warned Ahmed this week that by blocking the commander’s appointment, he is undermining the power-transition deal that his father signed and that assured him immunity from prosecution.

Washington is also directly aiding the Yemeni military in its latest offensive. U.S. troops are operating from a desert air base near the main battle zones to help coordinate assaults and airstrikes, according to Yemeni officials.

The officials said it was the most direct American involvement yet in the country’s expanding campaign against AQAP.

Also Thursday, Yemeni military officials said a suspected U.S. drone-fired missile struck two vehicles in the city of Shibam in Hadramawt province. The officials said the strike destroyed one of the vehicles, killed its three occupants who were believed to be linked to al-Qaida, and wounded two in the second car.

Yemeni warplanes, meanwhile, struck a vehicle in the town of Shaqra, killing six suspected militants, officials said.

Also in the south, the bodies of 11 Yemeni army soldiers and civilian volunteers fighting alongside the military were found after al-Qaida retreated from an area near the city of Lawder, officials said. The victims were believed to have been killed execution-style, they said.

“Most of the areas surrounding Lawder are clear of al-Qaida now,” one military official said.

All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
